Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of rhythmic exercise and strengthening-aerobic exercise on physical fitness and modified visual analogue scale(MVAS) in older females for 8 weeks.

METHOD: The subjects were classified into groups with a rhythmic group(RG, n=12), a strengthening-aerobic group(SAG, n=9) and a control group(CG, n=8). There were 47 older females of 72.39¡¾5.5years. The RG executed 70minutes rhythmic program a day, two times per week for 8 weeks. The SAG included wrist and ankle weight sandbag for strengthening exercise mainly and bicycling for aerobic exercise and the program was performed 60minutes a day two or three times per week for 8 weeks. Data were analyzed with ANOVA for repeated measures and paired t-test using SPSS program.
RESULT: The results were as follows; The RG was significantly improved on lower muscular endurance, upper flexibility(Right), DBP, and resting HR in older females. The SAG was significantly improved on cardiorespiratory fitness and upper muscular strength(left) in older females. In MVAS, the SAG had a positive effect on back pain. Both groups showed improvements in the other categories of MVAS but did not reach statistical significance.

CONCLUSION: The rhythmic exercise is more effective than the strengthening-aerobic exercise for improving the physical fitness of older females. We believed that developing of rhythmic exercise and strenghening-aerobic exercise together would be the most helpful program for older females in aging society.
